Spiš Castle: The Mighty Guardian of Spiš

You will spot it from afar—it towers over Spišské Podhradie and reminds us of the rich history of this area. Spiš Castle is the true landmark of the region, and rightly so. Built in the 12th century, it still commands respect today and recalls the ancient power of the Kingdom of Hungary.

In its glory days, the castle was an important center of political, economic, and cultural life. Prominent families like the Zápolya, Thurzo, and Csáky clans took it under their patronage. Over the centuries, it gradually changed its face from a stone Romanesque fortress to an impressive complex with three courtyards to meet the demanding needs of its owners.

In 1780, the castle fell victim to a devastating fire—yet its solid walls still surround the remains of a two-story Romanesque palace and a three-nave Romanesque-Gothic basilica.

A panoramic view of the vast Spiš Castle and its fortifications towering over the green landscape. An ideal destination for a day trip, where a personal guide will help you navigate the history of this landmark.

Walk through places where history left a lasting mark. Step into vast courtyards, touch stones that remember the ancient past, look at the preserved exhibits, and climb the castle tower to enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the Spiš region. In good weather, you might even see the peaks of the High Tatras.

Fun Fact

From Spiš straight to Hollywood. Yes, Spiš Castle is not just an impressive historical monument, but also a real movie star. Thanks to its photogenic look, it became the backdrop for blockbusters like Dragonheart or The Last Legion.

The beautiful city center of Levoča bathed in sunlight. The historic Town Hall on the Main Square is an ideal destination for a trip, during which a personal guide will take you through centuries of history.

Levoča: The Historical Pearl of the Region

A place you simply cannot miss when exploring Spiš is Levoča. You will enter the city through the monumental Košice Gate, which instantly transports you to another era.

The Main Square (Master Paul’s Square) feels like a living museum. It is lined with dozens of burgher houses and grand buildings that served as residences for the local nobility in the late Middle Ages. Although Levoča never had its own castle, it did not lack fortification walls. These have been preserved to this day and embrace the entire historical center.

The tower of the Basilica of St. James in the city center of Levoča. A great tip for a historical trip to the Main Square, which is best enjoyed with a personal guide.

Your visit to the Basilica of St. James will be truly unforgettable. This 14th-century basilica hides a unique world treasure—the main altar by Master Paul of Levoča. It is a carved and painted wooden altar that stands 18.62 meters high, making it the largest of its kind in Europe. Together with the wooden churches of Eastern Slovakia, it is proof of the incredible skill of Slovak carpenters and carvers.

During the city tour, we will not miss:

  • The Iron Cage of Shame from the 17th century. It served as a place for public punishment of people who committed minor offenses (such as drunkenness, gossip, or adultery).
  • The Old Town Hall from the 15th-17th century, which now houses a museum.
  • The Evangelical Lutheran Church with its dome, built in 1837.
