The mysterious atmosphere and stories hidden behind the ancient frescoes will draw you into a world where history isn’t just told, but comes to life.
What awaits you on this 1-day trip?

You can spot it from afar—it towers over Spišské Podhradie and serves as a reminder of the region’s rich history. Spiš Castle is the region’s dominant landmark, and rightly so. Built in the 12th century, it still commands respect today and serves as a reminder of the ancient power of the Kingdom of Hungary.
In its glory days, the castle was an important center of political, economic, and cultural activity. Prominent families like the Zápolya, Thurzo, and Csáky clans took it under their patronage. Over the centuries, it gradually transformed from a stone Romanesque fortress to an impressive complex with three courtyards to meet the demanding needs of its owners.
In 1780, the castle fell victim to a devastating fire—yet its solid walls still surround the remains of a two-story Romanesque palace and a three-nave Romanesque-Gothic basilica.

Take a stroll through places where history has left its lasting mark. Step into the vast courtyards, touch the stones that remember the ancient past, look at the preserved exhibits, and climb the castle tower to enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the Spiš region. In good weather, you may even see the peaks of the High Tatras.
From Spiš straight to Hollywood. Yes, Spiš Castle is not just an impressive historical monument, but also a real movie star. Thanks to its photogenic look, it became the backdrop for blockbusters like Dragonheart or The Last Legion.

A place you simply cannot miss when exploring the Spiš region is Levoča. You enter the city through the monumental Košice Gate, which instantly transports you to another era.
The Main Square (Master Paul’s Square) feels like a living museum. It is lined with dozens of burgher houses and notable buildings that served as residences of the local nobility in the late Middle Ages. Although Levoča never had its own castle, it did have fortification walls, which have been preserved to this day and encircle the entire historic center.

A visit to the Basilica of St. James will be truly unforgettable. This 14th-century basilica hides one of the world’s most unique treasures—the main altar by Master Paul of Levoča. It is a carved and painted wooden altar which, at 18.62 meters tall, is the largest of its kind in Europe. Together with the wooden churches of Eastern Slovakia, it is proof of the incredible skill of Slovak carpenters and carvers.
