Journey to the Past: Zuberec Open Air Museum

We will start our history-filled day in the village of Zuberec, the gateway to the Western Tatras. As we step into the Zuberec Open Air Museum, we’ll be instantly transported back to a time when life flowed in harmony with nature and hard work.

The most precious gem of the entire complex is the late-Gothic Church of St. Elizabeth of Hungary from Zábrež. This wooden gem was likely built as early as the beginning of the 15th century. It will captivate you not only with its ancient architecture but also with its interior with Renaissance paintings and a 17-th century choir gallery.

Tourists walking on a path in the area of the Museum of the Orava Village, known as Zuberec Open Air Museum, past traditional wooden houses.

This building is a perfect example of the craftsmanship of the old carpenters. If you’re captivated by this sacred architectural style, you can explore other wooden churches in Eastern Slovakia.

During a walk inside the Zuberec Open Air Museum, we’ll get a glimpse into the lives of our ancestors, and we won’t miss out on:

  • Yeoman’s Mansion from Vyšný Kubín: Get a glimpse into the life of the upper class. An interesting fact is that a private Latin school was once located in the older part of the house, where the renowned poet P. O. Hviezdoslav also studied.
  • Mill from Novota: A technical monument from 1890, that remained in active use until the mid-20th century. Here you can see the complete milling equipment as well as the shingle workshop, where roofing shingles were produced.
  • Mayor’s House: An imposing building belonging to the ancient Jurčák family. Its spacious room was once the center of social life – it was here that women gathered for spinning and feather stripping during long winter evenings.
  • Shepherd’s Hut: A symbol of traditional sheep farming in Orava. You will learn how shepherds lived on remote mountain meadows and how they processed milk and smoked cheese.
  • Blacksmith’s Workshop from Habovka: A place that once smelled of smoke and iron. You’ll see the original bellows for blowing air and the anvil, where the blacksmith not only repaired tools but also shoed horses and oxen.
  • Linen Draper’s Mansion: A grand two-story house of the Palider family. It stands as a testament to the wealth of Orava linen merchants, who traded all over Hungary. The house served not only as a comfortable residence but also as a warehouse for rare linen.

Orava Castle: Guardian of the North

You will spot it from a distance – it towers on a steep limestone cliff, more than a hundred meters above the Orava River. This castle complex is a natural landmark of the region, commanding respect since the 13th century and evoking the days when it guarded an important trade route to Poland.

In the times of its greatest glory, the Orava castle was the center of the entire Orava estate. Several prominent families took charge of it, but it was the Thurzo family who left the most significant mark here. They transformed the original stone fortress into a magnificent Renaissance residence and gave the castle the appearance we admire to this day.

Although the castle was struck by a devastating fire in 1800, thanks to later restoration efforts and the Pálffy family, it was not left in ruins. Today, it is one of the best-preserved historical monuments in Slovakia and consists of a unique complex of the Lower, Middle, and Upper Castle.

Walk through places where history has literally soaked into the stone walls. Climb hundreds of stairs, look into period rooms, and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape from the citadel’s highest terraces. Looking down into the depths below, you might spot traditional rafts that still sail down the meanders of the Orava River.

Fun Fact

From Orava straight to the silver screen! Orava Castle is not only a historical monument but also a real movie star. You could see its secret corners in the cult horror Nosferatu (1922) or in the movie Dragonheart 2. However, it also became the home of popular fairy tales like King Thrushbeard, Thomas the Falconer, and Love on a Hair.
