Wildlife experience: Unique chamois and marmot watching in the Tatras

Your personal wildlife, chamois and marmot watching

Follow the tracks of an animal that you will not find anywhere else in the world. The Tatra chamois is a living heritage of the Ice Age and the pride of our mountain wildlife.

Listen to the silence, which is cut only by the piercing whistling of a marmot – a clear sign that you have entered a territory where the rules of the wilderness apply. This is not a walk through a zoo, but a journey to the symbols of the High Tatras, which have lived here for thousands of years.

Why experience the Tatra wildlife with us?“

  • Comfortable start: We will pick you up directly in front of your hotel and drive you to the heart of the mountains. You will save hours of walking and spend your energy on the essential – on watching.
  • A tour with certainty: You will be guided by a native of the Tatras, who knows every corner of the High Tatras perfectly. He will take you to the most easily observable colony of chamois and marmots.
  • Look into the privacy of animals: Your guide will introduce you to the life of marmots or a herd of chamois and tell you interesting facts that you will not find on Wikipedia.
  • Breathtaking panoramas: We move in high mountain terrain above the forest line. Besides chamois watching, you will also take home photos of majestic peaks and valleys from a perspective that takes your breath away.

Tatra Chamois: Jewel of the Ice Age

The Tatra chamois is a living heritage of the Ice Age and the absolute pride of our mountains. This rare endemic species developed for thousands of years in the complete isolation of the High Tatras, making it unique in the world and different from its Alpine relatives. Our population represents a fragile symbol of wildlife that survived only thanks to strict protection. Meeting it is a reward for silent watching and humility towards the mountains.

Its real home is vertical walls and steep slopes. The Tatra chamois is a perfect athlete – the center of its hooves is covered by a soft elastic pad that works like a suction cup, and its strong heart can handle extreme elevation changes in seconds. In its natural environment, you will often see it posing on a rocky ledge or sliding on snow fields. It is fascinating watching, directed by nature itself in harsh conditions.

Guardians of the Underground

While chamois rule the rocks, the meadows below belong to marmots. These shy rodents are an integral part of the Tatra ecosystem and function as a living alarm system. Their typical, piercing whistle immediately warns the whole valley of danger. If you hear it, you can be sure that they have known about you for a long time.

During this wildlife trip, we will watch their colonies with binoculars from a safe distance. It is a fascinating theater – you will see the games of the young ones, mutual “boxing” or sunbathing on warm stones. Tatra marmots spend the whole summer preparing for winter to survive under the snow. It is a rare look into the privacy of a family that holds firmly together in harsh nature.

Did you know that…

… the Tatra chamois almost went extinct? For its rescue, an “insurance” was created in the past – a backup population in the Low Tatras. This was supposed to ensure the survival of the species in case the original colonies died out. Today, this unique animal thrives in both mountain ranges.

Scenery That Takes Your Breath Away

Thanks to the transfer, we skip the long approach through the valley and find ourselves almost at the place where the watching takes place. An easy, approximately one-hour walk awaits us in open terrain with views that usually require hours of sweat. Majestic peaks will tower before you, while the whole Podtatranská basin opens up under your feet. It is something you simply must experience.

Although technology saves our energy for wildlife watching, we are still in a high mountain environment where the weather changes in an instant. To enjoy chamois watching in maximum comfort and not be surprised by anything, do not underestimate preparation. Check out our 13 tips on what to pack for a hike in the High Tatras, and be ready for every situation.

Nature writes its own wildlife script

Animal activity naturally changes according to the weather and the season, so every watching is unique. However, we know the Tatras and the habits of chamois perfectly and we will do our best to be in the right place at the right time.

Join us and enjoy perfect peace during Tatra wildlife watching. Leave your worries in the valley and come with us for experiences that do not happen every day.
